Laurus cassia Lauraceae Magnoliids

Abstract

During the course of revision of the genus Neolitsea (Bentham 1880: 161) Merrill (1906: 56), nom. cons. for the “Flora of India Project” currently under preparation in Botanical Survey of India, the author came across the name Laurus cassia Linnaeus (1753: 369) used by Kostermans (1952: 85, 1995: 164) as Neolitsea cassia (Linnaeus) Kostermans (1952: 85) and eventually followed in the Indian Floras (Mohanan & Henry 1994, Londhe 2001, Chakrabarty et al. 2010, Pal 2013). However, reference to literature reveals that another name based on the basionym Laurus cassia is also in use, viz., Cinnamomum cassia (L.) D. Don (1825: 67), treated as an accepted name, e.g., in Flora of China (Li et al., 2008).
